Wikis

A Wiki is a form of website where users can collaborate by easily adding to and editing the content and organisation of information.

With a simplified process for creating HTML pages and recording changes over time, a group of users (often referred to as a community) can easily achieve a consensus about the content of the Wiki.

Wikis can also be used in the classroom with children and young people as well as by professional educators. Refer to our Wiki guide for an overview on wikis in education. Some of the wiki-based projects we are developing include:

Some Wikis allow open access but others may restrict editing via password protection or require formal registration. For example, our e-Global Classrooms is currently a closed Wiki.

Example - our educational wiki

There is an example of the use of a Wiki used to create review materials in English by students from Westwood Schools, located in Camilla, Georgia, USA. For educators, there is an interesting Wiki about Podcasting as a Teaching/Learning Strategy from the PodcasterCon2006 event held in the USA. The EduLounge is also an initiative to create a Wiki to share practice amongst teachers.
